Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of families does Lantern work with?
Lantern supports families whose children are experiencing challenges with learning, executive functioning, attention, organization, school confidence, or navigating the educational system. Your child may already have an IEP or 504 Plan, or you may simply know that something at school isn't working and aren't sure what to do next. You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
Can you help me understand my child's IEP, 504 Plan or school reports?
Yes. We can review your child's current educational plans, school reports, evaluations and recommendations with you and help make the information easier to understand. Together, we can identify the key concerns, organize your questions and priorities, and identify anything you may want clarified by your child's school or other professionals.
Can you help me prepare for an IEP or school meeting?
Yes. Lantern can help you prepare by organizing your concerns, reviewing the information you already have, developing questions and priorities, and thinking through what you want to communicate. Meeting support is also available when appropriate.
What kind of support can Lantern provide directly to my child?
Support is individualized rather than one-size-fits-all. Depending on your child's needs, sessions may focus on executive functioning, organization, planning, academic and learning strategies, confidence, self-advocacy, or social problem-solving.
The goal isn't simply to get through tonight's homework. It's to help children develop strategies and skills they can increasingly use for themselves.
Does Lantern work with schools and other professionals?
Yes. When helpful and with parent permission, Lantern can collaborate with your child's school and other professionals involved in their support. This might include communicating with teachers, educational specialists or other providers, attending school meetings, or helping make sure that important information isn't getting lost between home, school and outside support.
Where are Lantern services available?
Lantern is based in Los Angeles, with in-person services available across West Los Angeles and the South Bay. Virtual consultation and support are also available depending on the service and family's needs.
When are appointments available?
Services are offered by appointment, with daytime and some after-school availability. Because every family's needs and schedule are different, we'll discuss timing when we first connect.
How much do Lantern services cost?
Fees vary depending on the type and level of support needed. Some services may be offered as individual sessions, while others may work better as a package of support. Fees will always be discussed clearly before services begin, so you know what to expect.
How do I know whether I need LIGHT, PATH or HAVEN?
You don't need to choose. LIGHT, PATH and HAVEN are simply ways of organizing the different kinds of support Lantern provides. Every child and family is different, and you may need support that draws from one, two, or all three.
We'll start with what's happening for your child and family, identify where support would be most helpful, and build an approach around your needs rather than trying to fit you into a particular category.
What happens when I contact Lantern?
Start by telling me a little about what's going on and what you're hoping for help with. From there, we'll have an initial conversation to better understand your concerns, determine whether Lantern is a good fit, and talk about possible next steps.
